What is Reiki?

The Japanese word Reiki can be translated as ‘universal life-force energy.’ The system of Reiki is therefore, in its simplest form, a way of improving life-force energy.

Although the tradition of energy healing was referred to in Sanskrit writings over 2000 years ago, the modern-day Reiki system dates back to the 19th century, to a Buddhist monk named Mikao Usui. He taught a way of channelling this life force energy through the hands of the giver to the body of the receiver. This is what is now known as a Reiki treatment.

The Reiki treatment is a holistic, non-manipulative therapy that promotes overall wellbeing by bringing harmony and balance to mind, body and soul, encouraging the body’s natural healing ability. It works by returning the energy flow in and around the body to its natural, healthy state.

It is a complimentary therapy that will not interfere with ongoing medical treatments and will work well alongside them. It is not promoted as a cure for disease, however, can support healing and is becoming more recognised in various healthcare facilities.
